Musical Learning

More than learning to play the notes.

KeyNotes develops piano skills within a broader musical experience, helping students understand, apply and create with the ideas they encounter.

Playing & Technique

Developing coordination, control and physical confidence at the piano.

Reading & Understanding

Connecting notation, keyboard geography and musical understanding.

Rhythm & Aural Skills

Experiencing pulse, rhythm and sound through listening, movement and performance.

Creativity

Improvising, composing and making musical choices throughout the curriculum.

Communication

Developing expression, intention and confidence in communicating musical ideas.

Learning Together

Listening, responding, creating and performing with and alongside other learners.

Connected Learning

The group itself is part of the learning.

KeyNotes isn't six individual piano lessons happening in the same room. The group itself is part of the learning.

Students listen to one another, perform together, explore musical ideas, solve problems, create, respond and learn through shared musical experiences.

The teacher guides and facilitates that learning, creating opportunities for children to discover ideas with and through others while still developing their own individual piano skills.

Learning alongside others becomes learning with and from others.

Spiral Curriculum

Musical understanding doesn't develop in a straight line.

KeyNotes revisits important ideas in new contexts, allowing students to deepen their understanding and apply familiar concepts with increasing independence and complexity.

This spiral structure also makes the curriculum flexible. Teachers can respond to different levels of experience within the same class, offering support or challenge while keeping students connected through a shared musical focus.

Designed for Teachers

The structure is there. The teacher brings it to life.

KeyNotes provides a clear curriculum framework, lesson guidance, resources, materials and activities — without turning teaching into following a script.

Teachers can respond to the learners in front of them, use their professional judgement and adapt activities while working within a structure that supports consistency and progression.
